Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov created Smirnoff in the 1860s by using a traditional charcoal filtration method he developed. Vladimir Smirnov, his third son created Recipe No. 21 after escaping Russia during the October Revolution. When Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov started his distillery in Moscow in the 1860s, it was under the trading name of P.A. Smirnoff. It was later confiscated during the October Revolution when his family had to flee. Vladimir Smirnov started it up again in Istanbul, 1920.
Smirnoff is (activated) charcoal filtered and triple distilled, giving your cocktails that needed extra kick, purity, and smoothness before bottling. In Eastern European Vodka Belt countries, wheat vodkas are quite popular as wheat is one of the most common ingredients in grain-based vodkas, producing a fruity and smooth spirit. This unique blend from the Smirnov Vodka Distillery, now owned by Diageo was the first in the world to use a charcoal filtering process (ten passes) which provides it with a sharp and clean taste. Later on, in the 1990s flavoured vodkas like Raspberry, Mandarin, Green Apple, Raspberry, Cranberry, Raspberry, Citrus, and Vanilla were introduced.
