Kurayoshi is a new whisky brand introduced in April 2016 by Matsui Distillery. Founded in 1910 as a producer of Sake and Shochu, Matsui and its Kurayoshi Distillery are located in Tottori Prefecture, northwest of Kyoto and northeast of Hiroshima on the shore of the Sea of Japan. Over the recent years, the Matsui Shuzou Distillery has proven to be prolific in blending and aging whisky with both its Kurayoshi and Tottori product expressions and is now stepping confidently into the world of whisky distillation with its single malt collection entitled, The Matsui.
Geographically, the Matsui Shuzou Distillery resides in the foothills of Mount Daisen, a volcanic peak standing over a mile above the surrounding fertile plains packed with lush vegetation, rugged coastlines, rivers, and lakes, characterized by its delicious, fresh groundwater. The volcanic-stone-filtered spring water is used to distill their Sake, Shochu, and Whisky and bring it to proof – resulting in significant purity and unique, soft mineral composition.
Composed of several Japanese batches, the Matsui – Tottori Blended Whisky Bourbon Barrel was made from malt and grain whiskies from Scotland and Japan. It is a complex and elegant Japanese blend with rich vanilla and oak undertones from being matured in ex-bourbon barrels for 3 years. Bourbon barrels help to bring out all the aromas of American oak to Matsui’s blend.
Non-chill-filtered and without caramel, this blended non-age statement whisky is characterized by mellow sweetness and aroma. Its mouthfeel is refreshing with a faint fruity sweetness and an ornate, soft, and lasting finish.
Drink Suggestion
